While suffering late-stage Alzheimer’s disease, a noted astrophysicist experiences a miraculous cognitive reawakening and races against all odds to reunite with his wife.
Even though he’ll never see it, I made Galaxies for my father. At the time I’m writing this, he’s living with me and suffering from dementia. His memory loss and overall decline served, in part, to push me into writing and directing Galaxies.
Galaxies is a story of love, sacrifice, and the cold indifference of cognitive loss experienced by millions of people around the world. Yet Galaxies also portrays love as something so powerful that it might conquer the barriers of illness, and even death.
As a writer, I sought to create a short film that would contain a complete story with coherent structure and arcs. As I worked on the story I tried to channel one of my idols, Rod Serling, by packing the film with unexpected twists and turns. I was also inspired by films like Awakenings, John Carpenter's Starman, The Notebook, and Charly.
In the end I hope Galaxies tells a fresh story—because at this point in cinematic history, it can feel like every story has already been told.
As we enter the festival circuit, Galaxies is being developed into a feature film.
